About this event
Journey beneath the waves where a complex, biologically diverse world awaits. In this talk, we explore the physical and biological wonders of the seafloor, focusing on its distinctive features and the remarkable ecosystems that support organisms that thrive in extreme environments. We will also review scientific advancements used to study the ocean's deepest parts. Dr. Katherine Ellins is a geoscientist, educator, and aspiring artist based in Lakeway. She has 35 years of experience in scientific research, education, and leadership, and has worked on both land-based geoscience projects and ocean research expeditions. Dr. Ellins retired from the University of Texas Jackson School of Geosciences in 2021, closing her formal academic career. She still actively supports the geoscience community by working with the Geological Society of America on programs for students and early-career professionals. Her main interests include geoheritage, which links geology, biodiversity, economic growth, and cultural heritage, as well as exploring the connection between science and art.
